Day 69: Caught in Fences

I’ve taken a lot of photographs of things caught in fences. Leaves, balloons, droplets of rain and a range of garbage and miscellaneous clothing. This was just going to be another of a less then interesting series until I put it through a black and white process. Something in me clicked as to why I keep taking pictures of things caught in fences.
Often we all feel trapped, restricted or otherwise confined in someway in our lives. I am certainly no exception and would go so far as to say that I am the perfect example. But as I was working on the photograph I found myself wondering about the background. Why do I always concentrate on being caught in a fence when there is so much beyond the fence? It’s not a matter of the grass being greener or even there being a fence there at all. For the most part, our greatest fences are the ones we have created ourselves. From a photographic perspective, it is a simple solution. Anyone with any experience will tell you then when standing directly in front of a fence and focus on something beyond the fence it basically vanishes. I could learn to apply this more in my own daily life. Focus on what is beyond, where it is I wish to or should be, and the self created fences of inhibition and false security would basically … vanish.
A slightly larger version as well as the original color version (both on flickr).
